Organizational politics

Cited from "Understanding organizational politics" from Lynda.com
  1. For any major issue at work that you are involved with, learn to get the pulse. Don't wait for public meets to find out where people stand on a given issue. Get out of your office, stop by people's cubes or offices, and chat with people in the cafeteria and in the hall. Show integrity and be positive in these interactions but talk about major goings on at work so that you can stay in the loop. If one is connected the way one should, one will never be surprised by what someone says in a meeting.
  2. Learn to pick your battles. Remember one has a finite amount of reputational captial one can spend on any given issue.
  3. Find ways to help others achieve the wins they are chasing. Support others increases the odds they will support you later when needed.
View your interactions as investments.
